Streaming media from external hard drive to an att uverse box?

I have a 500gb external hard drive with media on it and I was wondering what kind of format it had to be in to be read by my att uverse cable box? And if it is possible what are the instructions to do it?|||The USB port on the U-verse cable boxes only provide power and work with the AT%26amp;T U-verse RF remote at this time. An external hard drive cannot be plugged into it. You can setup media sharing to stream music and pictures from your computer to the cable box.
